Description: The Center for High Throughput Computing provides high throughput computation resources to researchers both on and off of the UW campus. We administer over one thousand Gnu/Linux servers in four campus datacenters. This understandably requires care and maintenance, much of which is student provided. The work focuses heavily on hardware maintenance (racking servers, troubleshooting, parts replacement, communication with vendors) and on operating system troubleshooting. Students will have the opportunity to learn useful, valuable and marketable Gnu/Linux operating system skills from highly experienced system administrators.

Requirements: Existing skills in working with Gnu/Linux operating system distributions is a plus. Must be able to manipulate fairly heavy objects when necessary (servers are usually 25 to 40 pounds). Must have adequate communication skills and be willing to speak with vendors on the phone to request repairs and parts replacements. Must be driven to learn able to work independently as well as in a team environment. Students who are likely to be around for two years or more are preferred.

Schedule: Position begins as soon as the paperwork is processed. Hours will be part-time with a maximum of 30 hours per week. Hours from other UW student hourly positions count against the 30 hour limit as well, so holding another student hourly position is discouraged. Work times are somewhat flexible so long as the job is getting done. School comes first.

To Apply: Please submit current summer availability, cover letter, and resume via email to Aaron Moate, System Administrator, at

Pay: $11.00-$13.00/hr
